Interview with Billie and Sasha from Spill
Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
We caught up childhood best friends: Sasha Pallari (SP) and Billie Bhatia (BB) about their podcasting journey as they kick off season 2 of Spill. The Messy Years. Take a read to discover their inspiration and their key tips to success!
What inspired you to start podcasting?
We have been best friends for almost 27 years and after ironically ending up in the same industry (Billie trained in law & Sasha in Musical Theatre) we started to film and create content together online. The genuine chemistry of our friendship was so well received by our audiences, it felt like a natural progression to create a podcast.
What has been the most rewarding episode or moment in your podcasting journey so far?
BB: The Real Slim Praisey episode.
Sasha and I have discussed weight, body image and self worth between ourselves almost all our lives. There has always been a safe space between us on those topics, and it was incredibly nerve-wracking and exposing to have those conversations out loud. However, the response to the episode was incredible – we promised candour with this podcast because that was what was missing in this space, real conversations about how we are really feeling, and allowing ourselves to be vulnerable brought a sense of community together.
SP – Both the divorce and weight episodes felt very vulnerable to share with the world but I was so proud of our friendship holding such safety which allowed us to do. I don’t think either of us realised the impact sharing such raw and honest conversations would have but the response was so overwhelmingly positive, we both felt really proud.
What episodes should we watch out for in the new series? Why?
We go deep this season – there’s some very silly episodes in there and some more thought-provoking ones too. Mix it up and give episode 2 on dating standards a listen for a lol, and if you’re in the market to reconsider your life our episode on what success looks like to both of us won’t do that, but you might find something interesting in there.
How would you describe your show in 5 words?
Honest, hilarious, safe, silly, comforting.
What would you say has been the biggest challenge in your podcasting journey?
Getting Sasha to brush her hair, and stop complaining about London.
What are all the different things that you do to help promote your podcast?
We heavily rely on social media to share assets of each episode to drive downloads. Tik Tok, Instagram & YouTube.
Of these, what has been the most effective?
Instagram has so far been the most effective because when listeners share that they’re enjoying the episodes we’re able to use their posts as reviews. We’ve spent years individually building up an engaged audience and they both primarily sit on Instagram.
If you could interview anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
SP: Lin Manuel Miranda, Adele & Emma Thompson so that I could force them all to adopt me
BB: David Attenborough, Adele, Judy Dench – this would just be an excuse to make them my best friends.
What show would you love to be a guest on?
Call Her Daddy, And Louis Theroux, Table Manners, Dish
What are your favourite podcasts to listen to and why?
- Call Her Daddy by Alexandra Copper
- How to fail by Elizabeth Day
- Dish
- Table Manners
- I’m Grand Mam
